Cartoons & Pillow Crafting

Whatever happened to Saturday morning cartoons? Flashback to the good ol’ days! We’ll watch Adventure Time (TV-PG), craft pillows, and snack on breakfast foods. Registration preferred.

LEGO Saturday

Bring the family to the South Side Library to play and build with LEGOS in the Children's Area from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.! For youth ages 5-12. This is an unsupervised, drop-in program. Parent or guardian must be present with children.

AARP Tax Preparation Assistance

Visit the East Side Library every Wednesday and Saturday from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm for tax preparation assistance from AARP. All help will be given on a first come, first serve basis.

(On Wednesdays, the meeting room will be open for tax assistance only; no library services will be available.)

Judy Moody & Stink: The Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Treasure Hunt Sneak Preview

Come to the library for a special sneak preview of the Des Moines Community Playhouse production of Judy Moody & Stink: The Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Treasure Hunt, based on the hilarious book series by Megan McDonald. Judy Moody and her brother Stink team up to solve puzzles and unearth clues in this swashbuckling adventure that might lead to buried treasure. Enjoy the performance and register to win free tickets to the play!

Exploring Buried Buxton

David Gradwohl, professor emeritus of anthropology and founding director of the ISU Archeological lab, will provide a presentation on Buxton, Iowa. Buxton, a coal mining town, which existed between 1900 and 1925, boasted a large Black population of professionals and immigrants from countries such as Belgium, Sweden, France, Norway and Germany. The town’s residents of diverse heritages existed with little racial and ethnic discrimination until its evacuation. A question and answer session will immediately follow the formal program.

CSI: Des Moines

It’s not as simple as it looks on TV. Jump into the universe of blood spatter, bullet fragments, and fingerprints during CSI: Des Moines. Retired DMPD Crime Scene Investigator Greg Gourd will share stories about the real-world challenges of forensics and discuss procedures that real investigators use to collect and document evidence at a crime scene.


Stop by the children's area at Central Library to explore, create, and play! This is an unstaffed program where activities are self-led. Parent/Guardian must be present with child, and supplies may be limited.
